The Order of the Alamo
The Order of the Alamo was founded in 1909 by a group of patriotic San Antonio men who wished to enlarge Fiesta’s annual celebration of the heroic struggle for Texas’ Independence from Mexico. Named for the Shrine of Texas liberty, the Order honors and celebrates Texas’ heroic struggle by electing a Queen to reign over San Antonio’s Fiesta celebrations each year, and to provide for her Coronation with pomp and ceremony. Since, 1909 the membership of the Order of the Alamo have elected a Queen every year, excluding the war years, who has been crowned at the Coronation of the Queen event during Fiesta week. Today the Order of the Alamo consists of more than 1,000 members, many of whom are Fiesta San Antonio Commission members. Since the founding of Fiesta San Antonio Commission in 1959, The Order of the Alamo has been an active Participating Member Organization (PMO) and steadfast supporter.
106th Annual Pilgrimage to the Alamo
The Pilgrimage to the Alamo began in 1918 as a replacement for the Battle of Flowers Parade, which did not occur due to the country being at War.
The Pilgrimage to the Alamo is a solemn and silent procession from 6 blocks from the Vietnam War Memorial ( which is about a block from the St. Anthony hotel) to the Alamo, in which all 500 participants in the Pilgrimage walk as members of the groups represented, carrying floral tribute to be placed on the Alamo green, before taking a seat in Alamo Plaza. The procession is led by a riderless horse.
The program in Alamo Plaza honors those who died defending the Alamo on March 6, 1836, which made it possible for Texans to be victorious at the Battle of San Jacinto and win for Texas its Independence as a Republic, which endured for nearly 10 years. Participants in the Pilgrimage represent approximately 75 different organizations or groups i the San Antonio Area and include: San Antonio Command of the 6 branches of the US Military, the San Antonio Mayor and City Council members, the Bexar County Judge and members of the Commissioners Court, the Bexar County Clerk, the Alamo Trust, DRT ( and other chapters of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas), the San Antonio Fiesta Commission, King Antonio and the Texas Cavaliers, Rey Feo and his Court, Miss Fiesta and other Fiesta Royalty, the Battle of Flowers Association , the Order of the Alamo, the Great Chamber of Commerce as well as historical organizations and other invited groups.
The Pilgrimage is Monday, April 22, 2024 at 3:30 pm.
